Order the winter pool cover that matches your pool size. Each cover is made 2 feet larger than your pool, so it extends past the pool wall. For example, a 15-foot round pool receives a 17-foot round cover, and a 15 x 26-foot oval pool receives a 17 x 28-foot cover.

Top rails
Top rails add about 6 inches around the edge of your pool. A 24-foot pool with 6-inch top rails measures about 25 feet, and the 26-foot cover still leaves an additional 6 inches of overhang.
Using a different size
A cover that isn't the exact size can still work. A larger cover gives you more overhang and a smaller cover gives you less. Make sure you have at least 6 inches of additional material to cover your top rails.
